The History of
Bowness

A grand vision, a private bridge, and a town that stayed independent for decades.

Bowness began not as a city neighbourhood, but as a grand, independent vision. In 1908, English solicitor John Hextall sought to create an elite suburb of “great natural beauty.” To lure the city’s streetcar line across the river, he famously spent $75,000 on a private bridge and donated the islands that now form Bowness Park. Despite his aggressive efforts, a wartime economic slump and Hextall’s early death in 1914 left the dream of an exclusive estate largely unsold.

For the next several decades, the area flourished as a fiercely independent municipality. Its transition to Calgary only became inevitable in the 1960s when the city began charging residents double fare to cross the river. Following a decisive vote, Bowness was officially annexed in 1964. Today, its “stubborn pride” remains, and the park Hextall donated stands as one of Calgary’s most cherished green spaces — a lasting success from a plan that originally faltered.
