—Calgary Schools FAQs
How do I find out which school my address is zoned to?
Calgary's two boards both have address-lookup tools. CBE: Find a School at cbe.ab.ca. CCSD: Find a School at cssd.ab.ca. We also verify catchment for any home before you make an offer.
What's the difference between CBE and CCSD?
CBE (Calgary Board of Education) is Calgary's public school system — non-denominational, secular, open to all students. CCSD (Calgary Catholic School District) is the Catholic separate school system — faith-based, generally requires Catholic baptism for elementary registration. Both are publicly funded.
What about Charter, Private, and French Immersion schools?
Calgary has 22 charter schools (publicly funded but independent), 7 private/independent schools (Webber, Rundle, Edge, etc.), and several French Immersion / Francophone options. Charter and Francophone schools have city-wide enrollment with no catchment area.
Are Calgary school zones tied to property values?
Yes — specific catchments materially affect Calgary home prices, especially for high-demand schools (Western Canada High in Mount Royal/Elbow Park, Sir Winston Churchill in Hidden Valley). A 5–10% premium for being inside a sought-after catchment is common.
Can my child attend a school outside our catchment?
Yes — CBE and CCSD allow out-of-area requests, but designated-area students always get first priority. If a school is full, out-of-area students may be redirected. Always verify acceptance before counting on a specific school.
Where can I see Calgary school rankings?
The Fraser Institute School Rankings are the most-cited rankings of Calgary schools. The Government of Alberta also publishes school accountability results. Rankings don't capture school culture or fit for your specific child.
