Ramsay
The neighbourhood that built Calgary — from beer to the Calgary Tower.
Originally known as Brewery Flats, Ramsay is the backbone of Calgary’s industrial history. Since the 1880s, it has been home to the city’s early heavy-hitters: the CPR railyards, the Calgary Herald, and the Calgary Brewing and Malting Company. The brewery was a community pillar, famously providing relief work during the Depression. The modern name “Ramsay” only arrived in 1956 when four smaller estates merged into one.
The neighbourhood’s steel legacy is just as impressive. The Dominion Bridge Company site, which once produced steel for WWII ships, eventually fabricated the steel for the Calgary Tower. Today, this site — now Ramsay Crossing — stands as a bridge between the community’s gritty, working-class origins and its modern-day revitalization.
