Roxboro
Calgary’s quietest riverside address — by design.
Roxboro was subdivided beginning in 1912 and marketed with the phrase “along the river and through the trees” — a deliberate appeal to buyers looking for something quieter than the city blocks to the north. The real estate bust of 1913 slowed development considerably; the neighbourhood wasn’t fully built out until the 1920s. From the beginning it attracted Calgary’s upper class, including the first local Commissioner of the RCMP.
Author W.O. Mitchell, best known for Who Has Seen the Wind, spent the last three decades of his life in Roxboro. He died here in 1998, having written seven novels from this address. His house on the tree-lined streets of Roxboro is a quiet literary landmark in a city that doesn’t always remember its writers.
