About Inglewood

Inglewood is Calgary's oldest neighbourhood — originally surveyed in 1875 as the original townsite of Calgary, predating the city itself. The community sits along the Bow River east of downtown, with the river forming its northern and eastern boundaries. Inglewood has retained more of its 19th-century streetscape than any other Calgary community, with the 9 Avenue SE heritage commercial strip lined with restored brick and sandstone storefronts now housing eclectic restaurants, breweries, vintage shops, music venues, and art galleries.

The community's signature features are the heritage main street, the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary (Calgary's oldest nature preserve, 1929), and the brewery district at 11 Street SE — home to multiple craft breweries and tasting rooms. Pearce Estate Park at the eastern edge offers river-valley walking paths. The community is bordered by the Bow River, the Calgary Zoo, and the Confluence (where Bow and Elbow rivers meet — the original Fort Calgary site).

Schools include Colonel Walker School (CBE, K-6), with Forest Lawn High School (CBE, 10-12) and Crescent Heights High School in nearby communities. The community is approximately 5-10 minutes from downtown Calgary by car, with the Bow River pathway providing direct bike commute access. Inglewood is also walking distance from East Village and the downtown core for residents who prefer to walk to work.

Inglewood's resale market reflects its mixed character: historic homes (carefully restored) $600K-$900K, modern infill homes $1M-$1.5M, condominiums $400K-$800K, and rare loft conversions in former commercial buildings $700K-$1.5M+. The community's combination of irreplaceable heritage character, restaurant scene, and proximity to downtown keeps Inglewood among Calgary's most sought-after inner-city addresses. Compare to Bridgeland, Ramsay, and East Village.

Inglewood buyers tend to be design-conscious professionals, creative-industry workers, and downsizers seeking walkable inner-city character. 9 Avenue SE — Calgary's oldest commercial street — anchors the neighbourhood with independent restaurants, breweries, antique shops, and the Ironwood Stage live-music venue. The Inglewood Bird Sanctuary and Pearce Estate Park form the community's southern park network and connect into the Bow River pathway system. New infill activity is steady, with character-respecting townhome and rowhome developments slotting into older lots while preserving the heritage streetscape feel.

Frequently Asked

Inglewood FAQs

Why is Inglewood considered Calgary's most-historic community?
Inglewood was Calgary's first commercial district, established in the 1880s along 9 Avenue SE — Calgary's oldest commercial street, still active today. The Inglewood Bird Sanctuary (1929) is one of Canada's oldest urban bird sanctuaries, and the Pearce Estate Park preserves a piece of Calgary's earliest settler history.
What's on 9 Avenue SE?
Inglewood's 9 Avenue SE retail corridor features 80+ independent businesses — restaurants, breweries (Cold Garden, Inner City), antique shops, design boutiques, the Ironwood Stage live-music venue, and design-focused retailers. The strip is one of Calgary's most-visited urban retail districts and pulls premium pricing into Inglewood real estate.
What's the housing mix in Inglewood?
Inglewood's housing is unusually varied: 1880s-1920s character homes still in family hands, mid-century rebuilds, modern townhome and rowhome infills (slotting into older lots while preserving the heritage streetscape feel), walk-up condos along the commercial corridors, and a small but growing high-rise condo segment along 9 Avenue SE.
What schools serve Inglewood?
School coverage runs through nearby inner-SE catchments — Earl Grey School (CBE) for some K-6 addresses and Western Canada High School (CBE) for public 10-12. The community is a 5-minute drive from Western Canada High and similarly close to private school options.
