About Lake Bonavista
Lake Bonavista is Calgary's original lake community — the city's first private-lake residential development, opening in 1968 and setting the template that Mahogany, Auburn Bay, and other lake communities would later follow. Built around two private lakes (Lake Bonavista and Lake Bonaventure, the smaller south lake at the heart of Lake Bonavista Estates), the community is now one of Calgary's most established and tree-canopied SE neighbourhoods, with mature elms, expansive lots, and homes built primarily between 1968 and 1985.
The two lakes provide private resident-only access for swimming, fishing, paddling, and winter ice skating. The Lake Bonavista Community Association maintains beaches and the residents' centre. Unlike Calgary's newer lake communities, Lake Bonavista's lakes are completely surrounded by single-family detached homes — there are no townhome or condominium developments inside the community boundary.
Schools serving Lake Bonavista include Lake Bonavista School (CBE, K-4), Holy Family Catholic School (CCSD), Bishop Grandin High School (CCSD, 10-12), and Centennial High School (CBE, 10-12) in nearby Cranston. The community is bordered by Macleod Trail to the west, Anderson Road to the north, and Bow Bottom Trail to the south — all major arteries with fast access to downtown (~20-25 minutes) and the rest of the city.
Lake Bonavista's resale market typically ranges from $700K for an updated bungalow to $1.2M+ for fully renovated, larger lake-access homes. Many homes are on the market only after long ownership tenures — turnover is low because residents stay put. The community's mature trees, established character, and irreplaceable lake-access status keep Lake Bonavista among Calgary's most sought-after SE addresses. Compare to newer lake communities like Mahogany and Auburn Bay.
Lake Bonavista buyers are typically established families and downsizing empty-nesters who already know the south side and want lake access without leaving the inner-south. The Lake Bonavista Community Association (one of two in Calgary with private lake access) runs swim lessons, sailing programs, and ice skating from the same lakefront. Mid-century bungalows here often sell to renovators who restore the originals or rebuild as modern infills, slowly reshaping the streetscape. Trico Centre and Avenida Place provide rec, retail, and dining within a 5-minute drive.
