About Bridgeland

Bridgeland (officially Bridgeland-Riverside) is one of Calgary's most distinctive inner-city neighbourhoods, settled by Italian and Eastern European immigrants in the early 1900s and retaining a strong heritage character to this day. The community sits on the bluff directly across the Bow River from downtown Calgary, with the Calgary Zoo at its eastern edge and a pedestrian/bike bridge connection to the downtown core. Bridgeland has experienced substantial revitalization since the 2010s, with new mid-rise condominiums, restaurants, and infill homes complementing the heritage streetscape.

The community's signature feature is the 1 Avenue NE main street — a heritage commercial strip with Italian delis, bakeries (including the famous Lina's Italian Market), restaurants, and cafes. Memorial Park at the western edge provides green space with downtown skyline views. The community's walkability, restaurant density, and proximity to downtown have made it especially popular with young professionals and downtown commuters.

Schools include Riverside School (CBE, K-6), Sacred Heart School (CCSD), and Crescent Heights High School (CBE, 10-12) in adjacent Crescent Heights. The community is approximately 5-10 minutes from downtown by car or about 20 minutes walking — many Bridgeland residents commute downtown by bike or on foot via the Bow River pathway.

Bridgeland's resale market is among Calgary's most varied: condos from $400K, walk-up apartments and townhomes $500K-$800K, character homes $700K-$1.2M, and modern infill detached homes $1M-$1.8M+. The community's combination of heritage character, restaurant density, downtown proximity, and ongoing revitalization keeps Bridgeland one of Calgary's strongest inner-city markets. Compare to Inglewood, Crescent Heights, and Renfrew.

Bridgeland buyers skew toward young professional couples and downsizers from suburban detached homes who want the walkability without giving up neighbourhood feel. The 1 Avenue NE retail and dining strip — anchored by independent restaurants, the Bridgeland Market, and several breweries — defines daily life here. The Bridgeland-Memorial C-Train station puts downtown 4 minutes away by train. Tom Campbell's Hill Natural Park, on the community's east edge, offers some of the best skyline views in Calgary. The annual Bridgeland Block Party each summer is a community signature event.

Frequently Asked

Bridgeland FAQs

Why is Bridgeland popular with young professionals?
Bridgeland sits 4 minutes from downtown by C-Train via the Bridgeland-Memorial LRT station, with a walkable 1 Avenue NE retail spine featuring 50+ independent restaurants, breweries, and the Bridgeland Market. The combination of inner-city walkability, transit access, and strong restaurant density makes it a top pick for downtown professionals.
What's the Bridgeland housing mix?
Bridgeland's housing is unusually varied: 1900s-1920s character homes still in family hands, walk-up condos converted from older apartment buildings, modern townhomes, mid-rise condos along the commercial spine, and substantial detached infills replacing tear-downs. Lot sizes vary by street.
What schools serve Bridgeland?
Stanley Jones School (CBE) covers K-6 catchment for many Bridgeland addresses, with Crescent Heights High School (CBE) handling public 10-12. Catholic students attend Catholic options in adjacent communities. The community has excellent walking access for elementary children.
What's the Bridgeland Block Party?
The Bridgeland Block Party is the community's signature summer event — held annually each summer along 1 Avenue NE with restaurants opening street patios, live music, family activities, and one of inner-NE Calgary's largest neighbourhood gatherings. The event has been running since the late 2000s and draws attendees from across Calgary.
