About McKenzie Towne

McKenzie Towne was Calgary's first true new-urbanist community when Carma Developers broke ground in the late 1990s, and almost three decades later it still feels intentional in a way most suburbs don't. The street grid is tight, the front porches are large, and the village core — High Street — actually has a butcher, a pub, a bookshop, and the kind of tree-lined storefronts you usually only find in older inner-city pockets. It works.

Housing runs the full ladder: starter condos and townhomes near High Street, paired homes through the Inverness and Prestwick subareas, and detached two-storey homes on the larger lots in Elgin and Mountain Park. McKenzie Towne School (CBE) serves K-9 within the community itself, with St. Albert the Great (CCSD) covering Catholic students, and Centennial High School handling 10-12.

Inverness Pond is the community's quiet little secret — a fishing pond and walking circuit at the south end that locals use far more than visitors realize. 130 Avenue SE, just to the south, gives you everything from groceries to home improvement to date-night restaurants without ever needing Deerfoot Trail. Stoney Trail SE is a 5-minute drive and connects you to the airport in 25 minutes flat.

Resale pricing typically ranges from $400K townhomes through $750K detached, with the Elgin estate-style homes occasionally pushing $900K. McKenzie Towne attracts a steady mix of first-time buyers (drawn by the High Street walkability), growing families (drawn by schools), and downsizers from larger SE communities who want to stay in the south but trade lot for amenity. Cross-shop with neighbouring New Brighton, Copperfield, and Cranston when comparing.

Frequently Asked

McKenzie Towne FAQs

What is High Street in McKenzie Towne?
High Street is McKenzie Towne's village core — a tree-lined, pedestrian-first commercial spine with 50+ independent businesses including a butcher, pub, bookshop, restaurants, and small retail. The street has the kind of older-inner-city feel you wouldn't expect in a suburb, and it's a defining community feature.
Why is McKenzie Towne different from other SE Calgary suburbs?
McKenzie Towne was Calgary's first true new-urbanist community (build-out from late 1990s), with intentional design features other suburbs don't have — tight street grid, large front porches, pedestrian-first village core, and a layout that emphasizes community gathering. Almost three decades later it still feels intentional.
What schools serve McKenzie Towne?
McKenzie Towne School (CBE) serves K-9 within the community, with St. Albert the Great (CCSD) for Catholic K-9 in adjacent communities. Public high school students attend Centennial High School. Walking distance to elementary is excellent throughout.
What are typical McKenzie Towne home prices?
McKenzie Towne pricing ranges from $400K townhomes through $750K detached, with the Elgin estate-style homes occasionally pushing $900K. The village walkability premium means similar-vintage homes here typically price higher than equivalent homes in less-walkable SE communities.
